Abstract: Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of Tongluo huayu moxibustion in patients with vascular dementia. Methods A totad of 96 patients with vascular dementia admitted to Shenzhen Luohu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from September 2022 to August 2023 were selected for the study, and were randomly divided into the control group (n=48) and the observation group (n=48), with the control group using the conventional Western medical treatment, and the observation group adding Huayu Tongluo moxibustion on the basis of the control group. The Hasegawa’s dementia scale (HDS), the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), the functional independence measure (FIM) scores, as well as the lipid levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were observed before and after the treatments, and the overall treatment efficacy rates of the two groups were compared. Results Before treatment, there was no statistically significant difference in the comparison of HDS, MMSE, and FIM scale scores (P<0.05); after treatment, the cough HDS, MMSE, and FIM scores of the two groups were improved, and the observation group had a greater increase in each score compared with the control group (P<0.05). Before treatment, the difference between the TG, TC, LDL-C and HDL-C levels of the two groups was meaningless (P<0.05); after treatment, the TG, TC and LDL-C levels of the two groups were lower than those of the same group before treatment, and the HDL-C level increased compared to that of the same group before treatment, with the TG, TC and LDL-C in the observation group being lower than those of the control group, and the HDL-C being higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). The overall treatment efficiency of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Huayu Tongluo moxibustion can effectively improve the symptoms of dementia, improve cognitive ability, increase independence in daily life, and effectively improve the degree of lipid health in patients with VD.
