Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the potential benefits of chicory and bamboo leaf extract in facilitating the recovery of urinary function following surgery for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods A total of 120 patients diagnosed with BPH and admitted to Jinan Hospital of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine between September 2023 and August 2024 were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly assigned to either a control group or an experimental group, with 60 patients in each group. The control group received only standard postoperative care, whereas the experimental group received standard postoperative care plus additional treatment with chicory and bamboo leaf extract. The efficacy of the treatment, assessed through the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome score, urinary function indicators, and levels of inflammatory factors, was compared between the two groups. Results The overall effective rate in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group. After four weeks of treatment, the experimental group showed higher scores on the IPSS, TCM syndrome score, maximum urinary flow rate, and average urinary flow rate compared to the control group. Furthermore, the levels of IFN-γ and TNF-α in the experimental group were also higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences observed (P<0.05). Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that chicory and bamboo leaf extract has a positive effect on improving urinary function recovery after surgery for patients with BPH. The higher efficacy rate and improved urinary function indicators in the experimental group indicate that the addition of chicory and bamboo leaf extract to standard postoperative care may provide an effective therapeutic approach for enhancing postsurgical recovery in BPH patients. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects and to confirm the long-term benefits of this treatment. This study highlights the potential of natural extracts in complementing conventional medical treatments and offers promising avenues for future research in the field of urology and integrative medicine.
